International Baccalaureate Programme Courses

All Diploma Programme students participate in the three requirements that make up the essential core. Reflection on all these activities is a principle that lies at the heart of the thinking behind the Diploma Programme.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course encourages students to think about the nature of knowledge, to reflect on the process of learning in all the subjects they study as part of their Diploma Programme course, and to make connections across the academic areas. 

The Extended Essay, a substantial piece of independent research and writing of up to 4,000 words, enables students to investigate a topic of special interest that they have chosen themselves. 

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) involves students in experiential learning through a range of artistic, sporting, physical, and community service activities.

During 11th and 12th grade, IB Diploma candidates are required to complete coursework in all six areas of study (Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals & Societies, Science, Mathematics and the Fine Arts). Students also need to target the completion of at least three (and not more than four) Higher Level (HL) courses and three Standard Level (SL) courses. Students are encouraged to consider HL options in subject areas of strength, and the SL options for subjects of challenge. HL subjects are studied in greater depth and breadth than SL subjects. At each level, emphasis will be placed on the development of skills in critical thinking and analysis.

The achievement of the IB Diploma will mandate the completion of an Extended Essay (an individually designed scholarly research paper), the Theory of Knowledge (TOK I and II) courses, and the completion of Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS).

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme courses provide a rigorous, accelerated learning experience that develops intellectual skills and reflects academic achievement.  The Shaker IB Medallion is an internal recognition, offered by Shaker Heights High School, designed to stimulate the intelligence of young adults through the completion of at least THREE IB Diploma Programme courses and encourage engagement in the DP through the completion of at least one element of the DP Core as explained above (TOK class, Extended Essay, or CAS).

The requirements of the IB Medallion Programme include:

1. Students will complete all relevant internal and external IB assessments in order to receive 5.0 weighted grades.  Overall, assessments will constitute a large percentage of the student’s quarterly grade in an IB course.
2. Students are expected to maintain a “C” average in each course in order to be considered for continued enrollment in the next IB course.  In addition, students must exhibit “Satisfactory” or “Excellent” in their Interim Marks for effort, conduct, and work habits.
3. Students are expected to maintain personal integrity by following the expectations of the Shaker Heights High School IB Diploma Programme Honor Code.
4. Students will fulfill at least one element of the DP Core (complete the Theory of Knowledge class, complete a successful Extended Essay, or fully participate in CAS).
5. Students will successfully complete all IB coursework, during the 11th and 12th grade years, in at least three IB Diploma Programme courses at the Standard Level (SL) and/or High Level (HL) options.

Theory of Knowledge I/Government
Grade 11
Full Year – 1 Unit

TOK I/GOV is a core requirement for all IB Diploma Candidates. For the IB Diploma Candidate, TOK I/GOV represents the beginning of an important journey of self-awareness and reflection, presenting each student the opportunity to contemplate the degree to which their understanding of the world is shaped by the dominant paradigm of a given culture and time.

TOK I/GOV will offer consideration of key epistemological questions related to TOK integrated with a study of the evolution of political philosophy in both Western and non-Western societies. TOK I/GOV is dedicated to understanding the factors that shape our perceptions of reality, values, and political ideology and belief systems. We will focus on a number of formal elements of American Government in particular during the first semester, enhancing your understanding of the operations and responsibilities in our own democratic republic. The study of public policy, politics, and governmental institutions will occur in ‘real time’ as we trace the emergence of both national and international events in recognition of our interdependence and globalization. Comparisons of political institutions and practices across countries and consideration of universal political, social and economic questions will be a regular practice. Students will complete Shaker’s government service requirement, develop an appreciation of the fundamentals of the U.S. Constitution and the operations of the political system, and participate in Model Congress. Questions concerning the justification of the authority of the state and the nature of a just society will also be investigated.

TOK I/GOV operates primarily as a seminar-style class with high expectations for student involvement and initiative. The TOK I/GOV experience presents students a unique avenue through which they can better understand the foundations of their own belief system and increase awareness of the values and motives of others. Students are encouraged to become conscious of how they define their own reality, value the inherent complexity of knowledge, and appreciate the many important dimensions that knowledge claims play in policy making and in a global society.

This inquiry will begin with an examination of broad themes, such as knowledge and the knower, knowledge and technology, knowledge and language, knowledge and politics, knowledge and religion, and knowledge and indigenous societies. Questions and issues within the traditional academic fields of mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, religion, history, political science, the arts and ethics will be used as tools for this investigation. TOK I/GOV will encourage students to engage in comparative analyses and pursue synthesis as they consider interdisciplinary connections.

Course requirements include the keeping of a journal, frequent group presentations, short papers and the submission of a formal TOK essay. Students will also complete a formal TOK Exhibition that will be assessed as the Internal Assessment.

Theory of Knowledge II
Grade 12
Semester I of senior year – ½ Unit

The TOK II course is offered during semester I of a Diploma Candidate’s senior year. Themes from TOK I will be reconstituted through guided readings and discussions with an emphasis on a variety of contemporary topics—social policy issues, medical ethics, global financial crisis, questions of conflict and genocide, environmental concerns and responsibilities—and then related to TOK themes. Regular efforts will be made to bring in relevant guest speakers and host panels of leaders in their given fields. The objective is to inform and engage TOK students in discussion, debate and ultimately enliven the understanding of complex and meaningful topics.

Course requirements include participation in presentations, Socratic seminars, the keeping of a journal and the completion of the formal TOK paper that is externally assessed by IB.

English A: Literature I HL
Grade 11
Full Year – 1 Unit
Students will read a wide variety of world literature and engage in detailed study of these texts, as well as the cultures and contexts out of which they emerge. They will develop and apply critical-thinking skills and analyze the literature through both oral presentations and written responses. Through their study of texts from around the world, students will gain an understanding of other cultures, as well as their own, and an appreciation for the shared nature of the human experience. The course will guide students to express ideas with clarity, precision and fluency; to structure arguments, both orally and in writing in a logical, sustained and persuasive way; and to support their arguments with precise and relevant examples. Texts will be examined with the thematic link of power in its many manifestations and its effect on those who wield it and those who are victims of it. English A: Literature II HL
Grade 12
Full Year – 1 Unit
The IB Language A: Literature II HL involves one semester of a detailed study of works from three genres (non-fiction, drama, and poetry) and a second semester focusing, though not exclusively, on the genre of drama. The students engage in the formal analysis of texts and cover a wide variety of literature – both in the language of the subject and in translated texts from other cultures; this analysis includes a study of the way literary conventions shape responses to texts. Students completing this course have a thorough knowledge of a range of texts and an understanding of other cultural perspectives. They develop skills of literary analysis and the ability to support an argument in clearly expressed writing, sometimes at significant length. This course enables students to succeed in a wide range of university courses, particularly in literature but also in subjects such as philosophy, law and language. Texts are chosen from a comprehensive list of works in English and in translation from a variety of languages. The aims of the course are to encourage a personal appreciation of literature and an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism; to develop the students’ powers of expression, both in oral and written communication; to provide the opportunity to practice and develop writing and speaking skills, in student-led class discussions, oral commentaries and other situations; to expose students to a range of literary works of different periods, genres, styles and contexts and broaden the student’ perspective of other cultures and languages; to develop the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of written texts, and to promote in students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, literature. At the end of semester one, students will take an IB assessment in the form of a recorded oral commentary and at the end of semester two, they will take a second IB assessment in the form of two written papers – the first a close reading of a poem or prose passage, and the second, an in-depth discussion of drama. Chinese B, Mandarin IV SL

Grades 11/12    

Full Year – 1 Unit

The course will review and reinforce the approximately 800 characters learned previously and introduce 500 new characters. Language skills based on modern Chinese life as well as traditional Chinese culture will be developed. Students will learn the basic knowledge about the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, traditional regional operas, geography of Chinese provinces and 56 ethnic nationality traditions. Students will also have a chance to read the China Daily news from Chinese websites, and learn about the current policy in China, such as the One Belt, One Road Policy, the New Country Policy, and the Hope Project. By the end of this course, students will be able to make conversation with native speakers and share their own opinion about major popular topics. At this higher level of Chinese learning, students will be expected to be able to read and discuss daily Chinese news and be able to present ideas on specific topics. They will also read, write and discuss the topics of global challenges, science and technology, contemporary life, personal and public identities, families and communities, and beauty and aesthetics. Language skills will reinforce the approximately 1,000 characters learned previously and introduce 500 new ones. In the IB French SL learners build upon the grammar, culture and vocabulary they have learned in previous French courses. At this level, students are expected to be independent learners who will use previous knowledge to become better communicators with an in-depth understanding of current issues in the francophone world. It is expected that students should be able to function linguistically and culturally in a French-speaking country. We will also emphasize the way in which language influences knowledge as well as thought, and how the world can be perceived differently through the lens of a new language. Through various media (literature, movies, current news, podcasts or magazines), students will examine themes:  Identities, Experiences, Social Organization, Human Ingenuity and Sharing the Planet, all through the lens of cultural diversity.  Students will need to have an understanding of different registers of language using a wide variety of texts. Students will learn basic vocabulary and pronunciation, gradually building a foundation in speaking and understanding German. Some reading and writing follow in the natural development of language skills. Students become acquainted with German culture and gain insight into cultural similarities and differences. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, the student must complete the IB Internal and External Assessments. Students who opt for the IB AB INITIO component will be 11th grade students in the IB Diploma Programme.

Students will learn new concepts and linguistic structures at an accelerated pace. The four language communication skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) will be further developed. Students will learn about various aspects of Germanic culture and German-speaking regions of the world. Students who opt for the AB INITIO component will be 11th or 12th grade students in the IB Diploma Programme.

This course is designed to further the acquisition and production of German communicative structures and strategies introduced in the first two years of German study. All units are strongly contextualized and may focus on German popular culture and history as well as major movements in literature, politics and art. The course emphasizes the use of interactive technology as a bridge between cultures and a tool for achievement. Students continue to improve their skills in listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge and advanced grammar topics and additional emphasis is placed on speaking and writing in the target language. Full Year – 1 Unit

This is a college-level course conducted almost entirely in German. Students will read, discuss and write about current events, literary works and films as they fit into the major themes of global challenges, science and technology, contemporary life, personal and public identities, families and communities, and beauty and aesthetics. Proficiency in speaking and listening and a command of advanced grammar topics are a major focus in preparation for the Advanced Placement and IB exams. In addition to fostering advanced German linguistic ability, the course also emphasizes strong target cultural knowledge. Students will study the AP Latin curriculum, which includes selections from Caesar’s Gallic War and Vergil’s Aeneid in preparation for the AP exam in May. Students may also be eligible to participate in the assessment to receive the Seal of Biliteracy.

Latin VI SL/HL

Full Year – 1 Unit

 

This class will prepare IB HL students for their HL assessment at the end of the year. Additionally, this class will concentrate on written composition of Latin utilizing video recordings, songs, games and story writing to build vocabulary and incorporate grammatical constructions into everyday conversations and writings. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, the student must complete the IB Internal and External Assessments. Students may also be eligible to participate in the assessment to receive the Seal of Biliteracy.

This course will introduce students to the Hispanic world. Activities will focus on how to understand, speak, read and write Spanish. Students will also develop an appreciation of the diverse Spanish culture through the use of textbooks, visuals, audio, videos and technology. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, the student must complete the IB Internal and External Assessments in the 2nd year of the AB initio program. Students who opt for the ab initio component will be 11th grade students in the IB Diploma Programme.

Spanish III concentrates on improving students’ ability to communicate in Spanish. The class provides students the ability to master both productive and receptive communication skills with extensive listening, reading, speaking and writing practice. Students will learn about Spanish countries and their customs in more detail. They will read literature of the Hispanic world and review grammar as needed. Most class activities will be conducted in Spanish. This course builds upon the grammar and culture learned at previous levels. The focus is on language development and acquisition with the ultimate objective of becoming competent communicators. We seek to foster a positive interest in the culture of all Spanish-speaking countries and to promote real understanding. Students will appreciate that learning another language can enrich their lives and broaden their horizons, and possibly be an opportunity for international travel and work. Spanish V provides students with the opportunity to communicate in Spanish, using their understanding of Hispanic culture and their knowledge of the Spanish language. Topics explored include personal and public identities, family and community, aesthetics, science and technology, and world challenges. Instructional materials will include books, movies, podcasts, music, interviews and other technology. The fifth-year course is conducted in Spanish and the consistent use and continual improvement of spoken Spanish is calculated as a part of the class grade. Students learn to glean information, find and process main ideas, infer from linguistic, cultural and contextual clues, and synthesize ideas with a view to producing original thoughts on material they have heard or read. Full Year – 1 Unit

 

The sixth-year course is conducted in Spanish with some of the learning delivered to the cohort as an independent and collaborative study. Students will consistently use Spanish to communicate for continual improvement of spoken Spanish. Students will delve into Spanish and Latin American literature through the study of 16 different authors and the historical context ranging from Medieval times through more contemporary works. Students will continue to hone their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students may be eligible to participate in the assessment to receive the Seal of Biliteracy.

Business Management SL
Grades 11/12
Full Year – 1 Unit

This is a one-year course that aims to have junior and senior students explore the point of view of businesses and social enterprises through their decision-making process. The course is designed to give future employees, business leaders, entrepreneurs, or social entrepreneurs the tools to be creative and gain the decision making skills necessary for success. This is done through real-world case studies that cover strategic decision-making on the topics of the business functions of human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management. The culmination of the course will focus on a research project about a real business issue or problem facing a particular organization using a conceptual lens. History I SL/HL

Full Year – 1 Unit

The Diploma Programme history course is a world history course based on a comparative and multi-perspective approach to history. It involves the study of a variety of types of history, including political, economic, social and cultural, and provides a balance of structure and flexibility. The course emphasizes the importance of encouraging students to think historically and to develop historical skills as well as gaining factual knowledge. It puts a premium on developing the skills of critical thinking, and on developing an understanding of multiple interpretations of history. In this way, the course involves a challenging and demanding critical exploration of the past.  The course explicitly teaches thinking and research skills such as comprehension, text analysis, transfer, and use of primary sources.  In year one in Diploma Programme history, we will focus on Papers 1, Paper 2, and the Internal Assessment. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, the student must complete IB Internal and External Assessments.

The Diploma Programme history course is a focus in history course based on a comparative and multi-perspective approach to history. Psychology SL / I HL

Full Year – 1 Unit
Understanding why humans behave and think the way they do has puzzled society for centuries. Through the analysis and application of psychological experimentation, we can progress toward a better understanding of the people in our lives. In the International Baccalaureate SL (Standard Level)/ HL (Higher Level) Year one Psychology course, students will explore various perspectives to understanding human behaviors and mental processes based on psychological research. Main course topics include, but are not limited to: psychological experimentation and ethics, biological bases of behavior through functions of the brain, theories of memory, thinking, and decision-making, investigating the influence of cultures and social groups, biomedical treatments, therapies, reliability and validity of clinical diagnosis, psychological disorders, and mental health. SL/HL year one Psychology students also participate in the completion of an Internal Assessment (IA) where they plan, organize, and implement a psychological experiment as a group, collect data, and create individual reports of their findings. This course examines relevant psychological studies to provide hands-on real-world applicable experiences each day. Psychology II HL
Grade 12
Full Year - 1 Unit

Were you ever curious as to why humans and animals behave the way that they do? Psychologists have explored these curiosities in recent centuries and through the analysis and application of psychological experimentation, we can progress toward a better understanding of the people and animals in our lives. In the International Baccalaureate HL (Higher Level) Psychology course, students will explore various perspectives to understanding human behaviors and mental processes based on current psychological research. Chemistry I HL/SL

Chemistry I (IB HL/SL) is the first year of a two-year course taken in the junior year. During year one, HL and SL students will study the same core topics and develop manipulative and experimental skills necessary to successfully complete the course. Participation in the IB Group 4 Project is required once during the two-year program. Environmental Systems & Societies SL/HL (Year 1)

 Environmental Systems & Societies SL/HL (ESS) is an interdisciplinary Group 3 and 4 course. ESS I (IB SL/HL) is the first year of a two-year course sequence taken in the junior year. It is firmly grounded in both a scientific exploration of environmental systems in their structure and function and in the exploration of cultural, economic, ethical, political, and social interactions of societies with the environment. This course can be used by students seeking the IB Diploma to fulfill either a Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) or Group 4  (Science). Participation in the IB Group 4 Project is required once during the two-year program.

 

The HL course contains additional content for each subtopic together with two HL only topics. This will provide HL students with the capacity to address environmental issues and tensions that exist from multiple viewpoints with additional breadth and depth of both knowledge and insight. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, all students taking the course must complete the IB Internal (formal lab work) and External (written exams at the end of the year) Assessments.

 

Physics SL

Grades 12 (only for IB DP students)

This class is designed to fulfill the requirements for the IB Standard Level Physics course. This course will be especially important in developing the student as a knowledgeable inquirer and as a thinker. Topics include measurement and uncertainties, mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism, circular motion and gravitation, atomic, nuclear, and particle physics, energy production, rotational dynamics and thermodynamics. Participation in the IB Group 4 project is a requirement. The IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation course recognizes the increasing role that mathematics and technology play in a diverse range of fields in a data-rich world. As such, it emphasizes the meaning of mathematics in context by focusing on topics that are often used as applications or in mathematical modeling. Students are encouraged to solve real-world problems, construct and communicate this mathematically and interpret the conclusions or generalizations.

During these two years, the students will be required to complete an internal assessment and an external assessment (the IB Math SL examination) taken in May of the senior year. The internal assessment is 20% and the external assessment is 80% of a student’s IB score. A graphing calculator is required. A TI-84 Plus is recommended. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, the student must complete IB Internal and External Assessments.

Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches I and II SL

Two Years – 2 Units

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches  I and II SL offer a two-year experience for 11th and 12th graders. The courses will have an emphasis on students appreciating mathematics as a body of knowledge that has important applications across various disciplines and in an international context. Topics: (Math SL I) algebra, functions and equations, circular functions and trigonometry, (Math SL II) limits,  statistics and probability, and calculus.

 

During these two years, the students will be required to complete an internal assessment and an external assessment (the IB Math SL examination) taken in May of the senior year. The internal assessment is 20% and the external assessment is 80% of a student’s IB score. A graphing calculator is required. A TI-84 Plus is recommended. Mathematics HL II and HL III may be taken concurrently. When taken concurrently, students will be scheduled for two periods of math daily. One period will be for the IB topics that are not addressed in the Math II HL course, which is co-listed as Calculus BC. Topics for Calculus BC: Differential calculus, integral calculus and series. Topics for III HL: Probability and statistics, series and differential equations. The IB students will complete an Internal Assessment and an External Assessment (the IB Math HL examination) taken in May of the senior year. The Internal Assessment is 20% and the External Assessment is 80% of a student’s IB score. A TI-84 graphing calculator is required. To receive International Baccalaureate credit on a Shaker Heights High School transcript, the student must complete IB Internal and External Assessments. The AP BC Calculus exam is optional for IB students.

The class is designed to help students explore the structure and history of music, its global applications, performance, and composition. Students will study meter, melody, harmony, medium, form, style and context of music globally. The class will include the IB Music prescribed work and prepare and guide students for the required IB assessments: the Listening Paper, the Musical Investigation and their choice of creating, or solo or group performance. Visual Arts HL/Portfolio Workshop

Full Year (2 consecutive class periods) – 2 Units
Emphasis on:
- Creating 16-20 portfolio works of art for college admission in the Visual Arts.
- Submitting artwork to the Cleveland Clinic Expressions, Scholastic national/state competitions and for the college Merit Scholarship application.
- Creating a series of five works.
- Anatomical rendering, gesture and figurative drawing (Evening Life Drawing classes available at area colleges and art centers are strongly encouraged.)
- Weekly critiques, museum field trips, college presentations and home studio assignments.
- Developing a strong independent work ethic in the studio setting and cooperative learning environment.
